The main opposition party welcomed the president’s proposal to involve it in the country’s top security board Monday but demanded the right to report a minute of dissent on certain decisions that the party does not endorse.

“Reviewing the operating principles of the National Security Council; providing special status for the leader of the main opposition at the council; granting the right to put reserves on certain decisions; and allowing its leader to publicize his or her views on the issues are necessary for the inclusion of the main opposition leader to the MGK,” Mustafa Özyürek, spokesperson for the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, said early Monday, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The idea of including the leader of the main opposition came Sunday from President Abdullah Gül in an interview with the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, or TRT. He said the change would allow the main opposition to be better informed on certain problems of the country that would bring about healthier political discussion. But Gül’s proposal requires constitutional amendments.

Government spokesperson and deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek, speaking to reporters Monday, said the proposal was an important one that pundits would analyze in detail. “There is a need for constitutional amendments to realize it,” he said, adding that such amendments could not be made overnight
