Galatasaray coach Frank Rijkaard complained that Fenerbahçe made “conscious provocation” against his players during the two teams’ controversial Turkcell Super League game on Sunday.
Fenerbahçe beat Galatasaray 3-1 in a game that saw many objects thrown from the stands and several fights between the two teams’ players.
Rijkaard said he believed Fenerbahçe players’ and fans’ actions were all part of a plan and his players let it get to them.
“It was embarrassing,” Rijkaard said on GS TV, the club's official television channel. “They provoked very well. They were all part of the plan because they knew that we are a good team. But unfortunately we let them get to us."
Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe defender Fabio Bilica has been charged with his involvement in the fight that broke out while the two teams' players were warming up before the game. Galatasaray winger Abdel Kader Keita, too, has been charged with hitting Roberto Carlos after a foul.
The two clubs are also expected to be hit with bans, with Fenerbahçe being charged with fans' throwing objects onto the field and Galatasaray being charged with supporters' damaging the stadium
