A new city hospital opened in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on Oct. 3, 2026, at a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu. The facility is intended to serve Şanlıurfa and neighboring provinces.
According to figures reported at the opening, the hospital has a total of 2,000 beds, including 546 intensive care beds and 40 dialysis beds. It contains 65 operating rooms and 451 outpatient examination rooms, spread across roughly 500,000 square meters of enclosed space, with parking for 3,620 vehicles. The total investment was put at 39 billion Turkish lira.
Specialist services under one roof
The hospital brings together a range of advanced services that patients in the region have often had to travel for. These include cardiology, organ transplantation, stroke care, a burn unit, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and chemotherapy.
Like other large public hospitals built in Türkiye in recent years, the building rests on seismic isolators, 1,101 of them in this case, designed to help the structure remain operational after an earthquake.
At the ceremony, Erdoğan said total health investment in Şanlıurfa had reached 61 billion lira to date, covering 129 health facilities, among them 19 hospitals with 3,970 beds. He added that 16 further facilities were under construction in the province, with 8.5 billion lira committed. A new access road and bridge serving the hospital opened on the same day.
Part of a wider hospital program
City hospitals are large integrated campuses that combine many specialties that were previously spread across separate state hospitals. In a June 2026 interview, Memişoğlu said Türkiye had 27 city hospitals and that the ministry's target for 2026 was to open 60 hospitals nationwide, city hospitals included. He also said all hospitals with 100 or more beds are being built with seismic isolation.
Other large projects mentioned by the minister include a city hospital under construction in Istanbul's Sancaktepe district, as well as planned facilities in İzmir, Muğla, Tokat and Konya.
Residents seeking appointments at the new hospital can use the Health Ministry's central appointment system, MHRS, which covers city hospitals, state hospitals and family physicians.
