Istanbul police will close several roads on the city’s Asian side on Thursday, 29 October, for Republic Day celebrations, the Istanbul Police Traffic Inspection Branch announced on Wednesday evening, as reported by Anadolu Agency and CNN Türk.
The closures affect Üsküdar, Kadıköy and Ataşehir. In each case, the side streets and avenues leading onto the closed sections will also be shut, and the roads will reopen when the events end.
Üsküdar
From 08:00, Harem Sahil Yolu (the Harem coast road) will be closed between Kıyı Emniyet and Şemsipaşa Caddesi. Drivers are advised to use Doğancılar, Tunusbağı, Nuh Kuyusu, Selimiye İskele and Hakimiyeti Milliye avenues instead.
Kadıköy
From 07:00, Bağdat Caddesi will be closed between Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Caddesi and Rüzgargülü Çıkmaz Sokak at Kızıltoprak Meydan. The alternative routes are Fahrettin Kerim Gökay Caddesi and the D-100 highway.
From 17:00, a second section of Bağdat Caddesi, between Kasadar Sokak and Tütüncü Mehmet Efendi Caddesi, will also be closed. Drivers can use Şemsettin Günaltay Caddesi and the D-100.
Ataşehir
From 08:00, Ataşehir Bulvarı will be closed between Şubat Sokak and Turgut Özal Bulvarı, with Meriç, Sedef and Dicle avenues as alternatives.
From 16:00, the section of Ataşehir Bulvarı between Turgut Özal Bulvarı and Ihlamur Bulvarı will also be closed. The detours are Dereboyu, Meriç and Dicle avenues, and Ataşehir Bulvarı in the direction of Metropol shopping mall.
Getting around on the holiday
These closures come on top of the European-side closures around Vatan Caddesi for the official parade, covered in our report on the Vatan Avenue closures. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality buses, metrobus, metro, tram and ferries are free for 24 hours on 29 October with a personalised İstanbulkart, as set out in our Republic Day free transport guide. Residents planning to drive on the Asian side on Thursday may find public transport the easier option.
