Anyone driving in Türkiye soon meets the country's toll system. There are no cash booths on motorways or the major bridges: tolls are collected electronically, and failing to pay can turn a small charge into a much larger fine. Here is how it works in 2026.

Getting an HGS tag

The standard payment method is HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi), a sticker tag placed on the windscreen and linked to the vehicle's license plate. The older OGS system has been phased out. Tags can be bought at PTT branches and some banks, and balances can be topped up through PTT, the HGS mobile app, partner banks and e-Devlet. Make sure your balance is sufficient before a long trip, as a low balance can lead to a violation record.

Rental cars normally come with an HGS tag already fitted, and tolls are typically charged back to the renter, so check the terms when picking up a car.

2026 prices for cars

Toll prices were raised from January 1, 2026. According to NTV, a car crossing Istanbul's 15 July Martyrs Bridge or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge now pays 59 lira, up from 47 lira. The Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge costs 90 lira, while the Osmangazi Bridge across the Gulf of İzmit and the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge across the Dardanelles each cost 995 lira. Motorway charges depend on where you enter and exit, so long journeys such as Istanbul to İzmir can add up quickly.

What happens if a toll is not paid

If you pass a toll point without sufficient balance or without a tag, the crossing is recorded as a violation (ihlalli geçiş). Legal guides explain that if only the normal toll is paid within 15 days of the crossing, no fine is imposed. Miss that window and an administrative fine of four times the toll is added on top of the toll itself, issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Violations can be checked and paid through the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) portal, e-Devlet and other official channels. Anyone who disagrees with a fine can object to a criminal judgeship of peace within 15 days of being notified.

Fees and procedures are updated regularly. Before setting off, check the KGM website or your HGS provider for the latest tariffs and payment options.
