Petrol prices in Türkiye are expected to fall by 3.35 lira per litre from Thursday, Oct. 22, the second cut in three days, broadcaster NTV reported on Wednesday, citing sector sources.

The reduction follows a 4.30 lira cut to petrol (benzin) that took effect on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Together, the two moves would lower the price of a litre of petrol by 7.65 lira this week.

New pump prices

If the latest cut is applied in full, a litre of petrol would cost about:

  • Istanbul (European side): 76.25 lira
  • Ankara: 77.25 lira
  • İzmir: 77.45 lira

Before this week’s reductions, petrol cost 83.90 lira in Istanbul’s European side, 83.70 lira on the Anatolian side, 84.90 lira in Ankara and 85.10 lira in İzmir on Oct. 19, according to financial news site YatırımX.

Prices vary slightly between cities and between fuel distributors because of transport costs, so drivers may see small differences at individual stations.

Diesel stays well above petrol

Neither report announced a change in diesel (motorin) or autogas (LPG) prices. On Oct. 19, diesel cost 96.70 lira per litre in Istanbul’s European side, 97.80 lira in Ankara and 98.00 lira in İzmir, meaning a litre of diesel costs roughly 20 lira more than petrol after this week’s cuts. LPG, widely used in Turkish taxis and older private cars, cost about 41 lira per litre.

NTV attributed the latest cut to volatility in global oil prices, saying that even short-lived swings are being passed on to the pump. Fuel prices in Türkiye are driven by international crude prices and the lira exchange rate, but a large part of the pump price consists of taxes, including the special consumption tax (ÖTV) and value added tax.

Fuel is a significant item in household budgets and feeds into transport fares and the wider inflation rate, which the statistics office measures monthly; our report on September inflation has the latest figures.

For foreign residents who drive, fuel is only one running cost. Motorway and bridge tolls are paid through the HGS tag system, explained in our guide to HGS tolls, and seasonal winter tyre rules for commercial vehicles are set out in our winter tyre guide.
