A new rain system will move through northwestern Türkiye on Friday, while the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts enjoy a sunny weekend before a wetter spell arrives from Monday, according to a forecast published by Habertürk on Thursday afternoon.
Meteorology engineer Hüseyin Öztel said a low-pressure area over the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean was moving north towards the Marmara region. He expects it to weaken rather than develop into a long-lasting system.
Istanbul and Marmara
Light showers were possible around Istanbul on Thursday. On Friday, rain is forecast in Thrace and Çanakkale in the early morning, spreading to Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Bursa in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected along the Tekirdağ–Lüleburgaz–Kırklareli line, although rainfall totals there should not be very high.
Öztel said the rain is not expected to seriously disrupt city life or transport in Marmara. It should clear from Istanbul and Thrace on Friday night, leaving a partly cloudy and sunny weekend in the city. That is welcome news after the recent floods in Istanbul, which led to thousands of insurance claims.
Rain will continue into Friday night on the western Black Sea coast around Zonguldak, Bartın and Karabük. Ankara may see an hour or two of rain early on Saturday before a sunny Sunday, with daytime highs of 20-22°C and night-time lows of 4-7°C on the central Anatolian plateau.
Coast stays warm, then turns wet
For the coastal areas popular with foreign residents and visitors, the weekend looks fine. İzmir may see some local rain on Friday morning but will be mostly dry. İzmir, Muğla and Antalya, including their districts, are expected to be sunny on Saturday and Sunday, with Antalya reaching 28-29°C.
The picture changes from Monday, 26 October. A new system from the Mediterranean is forecast to bring a high chance of rain to the southern and western coasts, and Öztel said prolonged rain is possible in Muğla, Antalya, Mersin, Adana and surrounding areas. He advised people to follow forecasts closely, adding that strong rain on the south coast could spread inland towards the following weekend.
The eastern Black Sea is expected to stay sunny for the next four to five days, with highs of 19-22°C. Temperatures nationwide, near 25°C before the weekend, are expected to dip to 19-20°C briefly.
Air quality
The forecaster said the rain should also improve air quality in large cities, where nitrogen dioxide levels have been unhealthy at night, mainly affecting people with sensitive health conditions.
Late October usually marks the start of the rainy season on the Turkish Riviera, as hotels report softer autumn demand in Bodrum and Kuşadası.
