Bad weather disrupted daily life in Muğla on Monday, 26 October. Ferries linking Bodrum with Datça and with the Greek island of Kos were cancelled for the day, and authorities in Datça halted afternoon classes at every school in the district.
The disruption came on the first day of the heavy-rain warning for the province, which this site reported on Sunday. The warning runs from 05:00 on Monday to 03:00 on Tuesday.
Bodrum–Datça and Bodrum–Kos sailings called off
According to reports from the Demirören (DHA) and İhlas (İHA) news agencies published shortly after 11:00, Monday’s ferry services between Bodrum and Datça were cancelled in both directions. Sailings between Bodrum and Kos, known in Turkish as İstanköy, were also reported cancelled.
DHA said the Meteorology Service’s 4th Regional Directorate had issued a thunderstorm warning for Muğla and nearby areas. Showers had been passing over Bodrum since the morning, with winds reaching about 35 km/h. The reports did not say when sailings would resume or name the operators. Travellers with tickets should contact their ferry company before going to the port.
Datça schools close for the afternoon
The Datça District Governorate (kaymakamlık, the central government’s office in each district) announced that classes were suspended for Monday afternoon. The suspension covers all public and private schools and private special-education centres in the district. DHA, as carried by Habertürk, reported that the decision was based on data and warnings from the regional meteorology directorate. It was taken to protect students’ health and safety.
For the same day, pregnant and disabled staff in public institutions, as well as female staff whose children attend a nursery or day-care centre, are counted as being on administrative leave. Residents were urged to take precautions. By about 12:00, reports reviewed by this site did not mention similar school decisions in other Muğla districts.
What residents should watch
The warning period continues overnight into Tuesday. Forecasters have said showers could continue along the coast until Wednesday, so further cancellations of sea services and local decisions on schools are possible. Before travelling, check announcements from district governorates, the Muğla Governor’s Office and AFAD, the national disaster agency.
Some neighbourhoods also have planned power cuts in Fethiye, Bodrum, Marmaris and other districts on Monday. For background on life on the peninsula, see our guide to living in Bodrum.
