Türkiye’s State Meteorological Service (MGM) has issued orange warnings for parts of Muğla, Antalya, Adana and Mersin for Thursday 29 October, Republic Day, and yellow warnings for Istanbul and more than 20 other provinces, NTV reported at 13:55 on Wednesday. The ANKA news agency, citing MGM’s warning map as shared by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, gave the district-level detail shortly before 15:00.

The warnings come on top of Wednesday’s flooding in Muğla, where emergency teams rescued residents by boat in Dalaman after the Tersakan stream burst its banks.

Districts under orange warning

According to ANKA, the orange warning covers these districts:

– Muğla: Bodrum, Dalaman, Datça, Fethiye, Köyceğiz, Marmaris, Ortaca, Seydikemer and Ula – Antalya: Aksu, Alanya, Döşemealtı, Kepez, Konyaaltı, Manavgat, Muratpaşa and Serik – Adana: Çukurova, Karaisalı, Karataş, Pozantı, Sarıçam, Seyhan and Yüreğir – Mersin: Erdemli

According to ANKA, MGM expects heavy rain that may be very heavy and locally severe, especially in eastern Antalya. The hazards listed are flash floods, flooding, landslides, lightning, local hail, strong winds and waterspouts along the coast. NTV said showers and thunderstorms in Antalya and Muğla would strengthen from Wednesday night. For western Adana it gave 51-100 kg per square metre (1 kg/m² equals 1 mm of rain) from Thursday morning. Eastern Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kahramanmaraş could see 21-50 kg/m² from the afternoon.

Antalya: 16 hours of heavy rain overnight

Separately, the Antalya Governor’s Office warned of heavy rain from 18:00 on Wednesday until 10:00 on Thursday in the city centre and the Serik, Manavgat and Alanya districts, local outlets Yeni Alanya, Antalya Körfez and Akdeniz Gerçek reported. Rainfall could reach 75-100 kg/m² in places and exceed 100 kg/m² locally. Antalya has already moved its Republic Day torch parade and concert to Friday 30 October.

Istanbul and the yellow-warning provinces

ANKA said 29 provinces are under yellow warning but named only 25. Besides Istanbul, these include İzmir, Aydın, Denizli, Burdur, Isparta, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Bursa, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Hatay, Osmaniye, Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Adıyaman, Malatya, Elazığ, Tunceli and Bingöl. NTV said heavy rain is expected in Istanbul from Thursday morning, with locally very heavy showers across the Marmara region. On Friday, rain is forecast to continue on and off in Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova and Istanbul’s Şile district.

Dalaman beach loses sand

In Dalaman, runoff carried sand from about 250 metres of Akkaya beach into the sea and left deep pits along the shore, making the beach unusable, İHA and Aksiyon reported on Wednesday afternoon. The beach normally draws about 3,000 day visitors a day in summer.

Advice for residents and visitors

If you plan to attend Republic Day events or travel on Thursday in Muğla, Antalya, Adana or Mersin, check municipal and governor’s office announcements first. Stay away from stream beds and underpasses, do not drive through flooded roads, and call 112 in an emergency.
