The first boat in a project to convert the tour and passenger boats on the Dalyan Channel to electric power has been launched in Ortaca district of Muğla province, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported on Saturday. The vessel, named Tomris Hatun, had earlier made its first trial trip, the local newspaper Muğla Gazetesi reported.
Built in two months
The boat was built in about two months at the Kardak Turizm shipyard, according to both outlets. It is 11.95 metres long and 4 metres wide. On a test run with 22 people on board it reached a speed of 10 knots, the reports said.
257 boats in the first phase
Özay Akdoğan, the tourism operator whose company owns the boat, told AA there are about 492 commercial tour and passenger boats on the Dalyan channels and Köyceğiz Lake, and that the first phase of the conversion targets 257 passenger boats. Muğla Gazetesi gave the same figures when it reported on the plan earlier this year, citing Akdoğan.
According to AA, the project is led by the Muğla Governorship with the support of the Ortaca District Governorship. Muğla Gazetesi had reported that the governor’s office and the Ortaca district governor were following the plan closely. Neither outlet gave a cost for the conversion.
