Heavy overnight rain caused flooding at 20 locations across nine neighbourhoods of Bodrum in Muğla province, entering 17 homes and three workplaces, the Demirören News Agency (DHA) and İhlas News Agency (İHA) reported on Monday.
The rain began on Sunday evening and grew stronger through the night. According to both agencies, 46 kilograms of rain per square metre fell in the district, which is equivalent to 46 millimetres.
Streets under water in Yalıkavak, Türkbükü, Gündoğan and Mazı
Streets and roads turned into pools of water in Yalıkavak, Türkbükü, Gündoğan and Mazı, the agencies reported. Traffic came to a halt at some points, and roads that had been closed were reopened after teams intervened.
In Mazı, on the Bodrum peninsula, the flow of a local stream rose sharply and a car caught in the floodwater was swept into the sea. Fire brigade crews, Bodrum Municipality’s search and rescue team (BAK), the disaster agency AFAD and volunteer teams were sent to the area and began a rescue operation. The agency reports did not say whether anyone was inside the car, and no injuries had been reported at the time of writing.
In Yalıkavak, a retaining wall collapsed in the heavy rain, according to both agencies.
More rain expected
The Meteorology Service’s 4th Regional Directorate had issued a heavy rain warning for Muğla and the surrounding area before the downpours. Rain was expected to return to the area from around midday on Monday, the agencies reported.
The flooding follows the heavy rain warning for Muğla issued for the weekend. Recent storms also caused flooding further along the coast, as in our report on floods in Demre and Kaş.
