Thirty-seven people investigated in Istanbul’s capital markets fund probe have returned a combined 18.34 billion lira, İhlas News Agency (İHA) and NTV reported on Monday. According to İHA, the total had been collected as of Friday, 30 October.
The investigation is run by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office bureau for terrorism financing and money laundering crimes and concerns transactions in the capital markets, İHA and the daily Karar reported. Both described the investigation as continuing. The figures were reported as information obtained by the outlets; no official statement on the refunds had been published by the prosecutor’s office.
Share of the gains under scrutiny
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said on 6 October that initial findings showed 214 people had obtained about 187.6 billion lira in unjust gains from three funds, NTV and Karar reported. The 18.34 billion lira returned so far is just under 10 percent of that figure.
The reports did not identify the 37 people or say how much each had returned.
Investigation widened to market institutions
The probe has reached the leadership of the country’s market infrastructure. Borsa İstanbul general manager Korkmaz Enes Ergun was detained on 31 October on suspicion of membership of an organisation formed to commit crimes and bribery, and Atila Türeli has been appointed acting general manager, NTV reported.
The criminal investigation runs alongside the separate liquidation process for affected funds, under which investors have been receiving interim payments.
