Commercial boats working on Köyceğiz Lake and the Dalyan channels in Muğla must switch to electric motors within two years, and a 200 million lira grant fund has been set up to help operators pay for the change, according to İHA and the local daily Muğla Gazetesi.
The details were given at a meeting of the Köyceğiz Lake and Dalyan Channels Administrative Board, chaired by Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık at the governor’s office. Both reports said the legal regulation requiring the switch took effect on 17 October 2026.
Who pays
The 200 million lira budget was put together jointly by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, the South Aegean Development Agency (GEKA) and Muğla’s Investment Monitoring and Coordination Directorate (YİKOB). In the first stage, the money will go to boat operators as direct grants, both outlets reported.
Three standard boat sizes
The boats on the channels will be standardised into three types by passenger capacity: 24, 32 and 54 seats. Both reports said the aim is to bring order to boat traffic on the channels.
The grant rate depends on the route an operator takes. Two operators who merge and replace their boats with a single 54-passenger catamaran will receive a grant covering 70%. Operators converting on their own to a 24- or 32-passenger boat will receive between 40% and 55%.
Earlier conversion
The first electric tour boat in the conversion project was launched at the end of October, as we reported in our story on the Tomris Hatun. For more on the area, see our guide to living in Dalyan and Köyceğiz and our guide to living in Fethiye.
