A body recovered from the sea off Silivri in Istanbul has been identified as the second captain of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu, a vessel that sank in the Sea of Marmara on 2 September, İhlas News Agency (İHA) and Demirören News Agency (DHA) reported on Thursday.
The ship sank off Silivri after colliding with a vessel named Alsu, both agencies said. İHA reported that 10 crew members went missing and that the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation. DHA put the number of missing crew at nine.
Identified by forensic institute
According to both agencies, a male body was found in the water on Wednesday, 28 October, during search and rescue work. It was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute (Adli Tıp Kurumu), where examinations established that it was the ship’s second captain. The family received the body after the procedures were completed, İHA said. He is to be buried in Karşıyaka, İzmir, on Saturday, 31 October, the agencies reported.
A relative told the agencies that the wreck lies about 35 kilometres from Silivri in a deep area known as the "Marmara Çukuru" (Marmara Trench).
Families wait in Silivri
Search and rescue work is continuing for the remaining missing crew, including on the seabed near the wreck, both agencies said. DHA said the search is for eight crew members. Families of the missing are waiting in tents in Silivri, the reports said.
