Heavy rain that fell across Muğla province overnight and through Wednesday morning flooded roads in Bodrum and Marmaris, sent a stream over its banks in Dalaman and brought rocks down onto roads near Marmaris, Anadolu Agency (AA) and İhlas News Agency (İHA) reported on Wednesday 28 October.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the agency accounts.
Update, 18:30: In Bitez, Bodrum, a pregnant woman trapped at home by floodwater on Söğütlü Caddesi was carried out on a stretcher by Muğla metropolitan fire crews and Bodrum Municipality teams and taken to Bodrum State Hospital; mother and baby were reported to be in good health, Anadolu Agency reported. In Dalaman, emergency teams later rescued residents by boat; see our Dalaman flood report.
Dalaman: stream overflows, Şerefler road closed
In Dalaman, the Tersakan (also written Dersakan) stream rose sharply after rain that began overnight and continued into the morning, overflowing in some sections and submerging roads and farmland, both agencies reported. Police temporarily closed the road to Şerefler neighbourhood, which İHA identified as the old Şerefler-Fethiye road, as a precaution. Several neighbourhoods had standing water and some saw flooding, İHA said; neither agency named them or gave damage figures.
Dalaman Mayor Sezer Durmuş inspected the area and said municipal teams had been in the field since the night. Citing meteorological officials, he told AA that the rain was expected to continue until noon on Thursday and urged residents to stay cautious.
Bodrum: vehicles stranded on main roads
In Bodrum, rain from the early morning left water pooling on the Bodrum-Turgutreis road in Konacık, where three vehicles were stranded, AA reported. Water also collected on Atatürk Bulvarı, where some cars were stuck and residents helped drivers. Mayor Tamer Mandalinci visited the area, said crews were still working and noted that similar problems had occurred in previous years.
Marmaris: rockfalls and brown sea
In Marmaris, many streets and avenues were flooded, and rocks fell onto the Marmaris-Datça and Marmaris-Menteşe roads, AA said; Highways (KGM) crews and Marmaris traffic police cleared them. Muddy runoff from the hills turned coastal waters brown.
Local outlet Marmaris Yeni Sayfa reported that more than 50 kg of rain per square metre had fallen in the district over the previous 24 hours, after an orange-coded warning from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), which we reported on Tuesday. It said the Marmaris-İçmeler road was among the worst affected, and that authorities advised drivers to keep their distance and avoid unnecessary journeys.
For residents of the Muğla coast, more on the area is in our guides to living in Bodrum and living in Fethiye.
