Heavy rain flooded the market area and the entrances of some homes in the Konaklı neighbourhood of Alanya on Wednesday, the Demirören news agency (DHA) reported. The flooding came hours before a stronger spell of rain forecast for Antalya’s city centre and eastern districts overnight. A separate report carried by Ankara Gündem Haber also described the Konaklı flooding.
Konaklı market under water
Rain fell from the morning, according to Ankara Gündem Haber. DHA said the flooding was concentrated in Konaklı, where water collected on roads and disrupted traffic and daily life. Rainwater gathered in the neighbourhood’s market area and flooded it, and some tourists who had come to the market without rain gear sheltered under the stall umbrellas. Water also reached the entrances of some houses. Neither report mentioned injuries, rescues or a figure for the damage.
Warning upgraded for tonight
The Meteorology Service’s 4th Regional Directorate raised its warning for Antalya’s central districts and for Manavgat, Alanya and Serik from yellow to orange for the period from 18:00 on Wednesday to 10:00 on Thursday, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported at 16:01. It said very heavy rain could be extreme in places. It warned of flash floods, flooding, lightning, local hail, tornadoes, strong winds during showers and disruption to transport.
The Antalya Governor’s Office had already warned that some areas could receive 75 to 100 kilograms of rain per square metre in this window, and locally more than 100, regional outlets Yeni Alanya and Akdeniz Gerçek reported. The office urged people not to drive into flooded roads or cross streams, to stay away from open ground during lightning and to call 112 in an emergency. It said residents near stream beds, people living in basements or on ground floors and outdoor workers should take particular care. Thursday’s wider warning for Antalya and neighbouring provinces is covered in our Republic Day weather warning report.
Republic Day in Antalya
The Republic Day programme announced by the Antalya Governor’s Office sets Thursday’s official ceremony for 10:30 at the Antalya Sports Hall (Antalya Spor Salonu), after the governor receives holiday greetings at 09:45, Antalya Ekspres and Aksiyon reported. The metropolitan municipality’s torch parade and concert in Cumhuriyet Meydanı have already been moved to Friday 30 October, as reported in our story on the postponed parade.
Residents and holidaymakers in Alanya, Manavgat, Serik and central Antalya should avoid underpasses and low-lying roads overnight and check the governor’s office and AFAD channels before travelling on Thursday morning.
