Drivers, cyclists and coach passengers in Antalya face a set of temporary traffic restrictions from Monday, 9 November, as the city hosts the COP31 UN climate conference, according to measures announced by the Antalya Governorship and reported by several local outlets. The heaviest disruption is expected around the airport, the D-400 highway and the Belek hotel area during the leaders’ summit.
Heavy vehicles kept off main roads by day
Heavy-tonnage vehicles, intercity buses, midibuses and light trucks carrying more than 3,500 kg will not be allowed on designated routes between 06:00 and 22:00, Antalya Ekspres, Haber Aktif 07 and Doğayı Dinle reported. The routes named are the D-400 from Kemer towards the city centre, the D-400 from the Manavgat/Taşağıl junction towards Serik and the centre, the D-650 Burdur road from the Kepezbaşı junction and the D-685 Isparta road from the provincial border.
These outlets give the period as 9-13 November. Akdeniz Gerçek, Yeni Alanya and Antalya Körfez, reporting an earlier governorship guide, gave a D-400 ban on heavy-tonnage, tipper and long vehicles from 9 to 12 November, so the end date differs between reports.
Intercity coach services are planned to run between 22:00 and 06:00 on those dates, the İhlas News Agency (İHA) and Ekonomi Gazetesi reported in October.
Motorcycles, motorised bicycles, e-bikes and bicycles will be banned from 9 to 13 November on the D-400 between the Tedaş and Dikmen junctions, the Belek tourism road between the Dikmen and Rixos junctions, EXPO 2016 Boulevard and Kral Yolu, according to Antalya Ekspres, Haber Aktif 07 and Doğayı Dinle. Haber Aktif 07 and Doğayı Dinle said these measures were added by a metropolitan municipality transport board (UKOME) decision dated 2 November.
D-400 split during the leaders’ summit
On the summit days the D-400 between the airport junction and the Belek Shell junction will be divided, with the carriageway towards Serik left to ordinary traffic and the airport-bound side reserved for convoys of heads of state and delegations, Akdeniz Gerçek, Antalya Körfez and Haber Aktif 07 reported. Reports give the dates as 10-12 November or 11-12 November. Lanes at the airport entrance will also be split between convoys and other traffic.
Flights are not being suspended, Akdeniz Gerçek and Yeni Alanya reported. For travellers heading to Antalya Airport from the city centre, Haber Aktif 07 and Doğayı Dinle suggest Bülent Ecevit Boulevard, Rauf Denktaş Avenue and Kardeş Kentler Avenue as an alternative route.
The so-called Liderler Yolu (Leaders’ Road) in Belek will be fully closed to traffic on Wednesday, 11 November, from 07:30 to 12:00, according to Haber Aktif 07 and Doğayı Dinle.
Belek becomes a security zone
The Belek hotel area will be a secure zone with several checkpoints, and access will require accreditation, Akdeniz Gerçek, Yeni Alanya and Haber Aktif 07 reported. EXPO 2016 Boulevard will be open only to official vehicles, summit shuttles and emergency services, according to Akdeniz Gerçek and Haber Aktif 07. Hotel supply vehicles will have to enter through a single checkpoint at the Acısu 2 Atilla Koç Bridge, Yeni Alanya and Haber Aktif 07 said.
Schools in seven Antalya districts will also switch to remote learning on 11-12 November because of expected congestion. Our Antalya living guide covers the city’s districts and transport.
