The Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) has warned of locally heavy rain across the eastern Mediterranean and southeastern Türkiye from Friday morning, with the risk of floods, flash flooding and landslides, Anadolu Agency (AA) and Karar reported on Thursday.
The warning covers Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Siirt, Şırnak, Elazığ, Bingöl, Bitlis and the Hakkari area, as well as the southern part of Malatya and the western districts of Muş, according to AA and Karar.
Rain to last until Saturday evening in the east
The rain is expected to fall mostly as showers and thunderstorms, AA and Karar reported. It should ease in the west of the region on Friday night but continue in the east until Saturday evening, the same outlets said.
As temperatures drop in the east, rain is expected to turn to sleet and then snow in eastern Şırnak and around Hakkari, according to AA and Karar.
The MGM listed floods, flash flooding, landslides, lightning, small-scale local hail and disruption to transport among the possible hazards, AA and Karar reported.
Hatay Governorship: 21 to 50 kg per square metre
The Hatay Governorship issued its own warning based on the MGM’s latest assessment, saying strong showers and thunderstorms of 21 to 50 kilograms per square metre (21 to 50 mm) are expected in Hatay and around Kilis and Gaziantep, Medya Hatay and Aşi Gazetesi reported.
The governorship’s warning runs from 06:00 on Friday, 6 November, to 06:00 on Saturday, 7 November, according to Medya Hatay, Aşi Gazetesi and Kilis Kent Haber. Besides floods, flash flooding and landslides, it also mentioned strong gusts during the rain and the possibility of tornadoes, and urged residents to take precautions against transport disruption, the same outlets reported.
