The Antalya Governor’s Office has warned of another spell of heavy rain from the early hours of Wednesday, 28 October, with up to 100 kg/m² expected in the city centre and eastern parts of the province, local media reported on Tuesday afternoon.

Citing data from the State Meteorological Service’s 4th Regional Directorate, the governor’s office said showers would intensify from 00:00 on Wednesday and last until 11:00 on Thursday, 29 October, Antalya Ekspres and Akdeniz Gerçek reported. Central and eastern areas are expected to receive 51-100 kg/m², and western areas 21-60 kg/m². Akdeniz Gerçek listed Muratpaşa, Kepez, Konyaaltı, Aksu and the eastern coast among the areas facing the higher totals.

Floods, hail and tornado risk

The warning lists flash floods, flooding of buildings and streets, lightning, hail and tornadoes as risks, and says strong winds may accompany the downpours. At national level, the State Meteorological Service (MGM) has put Antalya among 18 provinces under a yellow warning for Wednesday, BirGün and Anadolu Agency reported, while nine districts of neighbouring Muğla, including Fethiye and Dalaman, are under an orange warning.

The new warning comes after a stormy start to the week in Antalya. The governor’s office had already warned of heavy rain on Tuesday, and on Monday night a tornado killed four workers at a construction site in Kepez. Storms also hit greenhouses in Kaş, Kumluca and Finike.

An MGM five-day outlook published on Monday showed thunderstorms continuing on Thursday and partly cloudy skies on Friday, Antalya Ekspres reported.

Schools and the holiday

By Tuesday afternoon, the Antalya Governor’s Office had not announced any school closure for Wednesday, Haberler.com reported. Wednesday is already a half day nationwide: the Republic Day holiday begins at 13:00 on 28 October, and Thursday, 29 October, is a public holiday.

The governor’s office asked residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to take precautions, and drivers to watch for poor road conditions. Official updates come from the Antalya Governor’s Office, MGM and AFAD; the emergency number is 112. For more on life in the province, see our Antalya guide.
