Planning an autumn or winter trip to Türkiye? For many Western travellers, getting in is simpler than it used to be. Here is a summary of the main entry rules for visitors from the UK, US and Canada, based on official travel advice.
Who needs a visa
British citizen passport holders can visit Türkiye without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business, according to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The 180-day window is rolling, so earlier trips within that period count toward the limit. Holders of other types of British passport may need a visa.
Since Jan. 1, 2024, US citizens have also been able to enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, removing the need for the e-visa that previously cost $52. Canada was exempted at the same time, along with Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Overstaying can lead to a fine on departure and a possible entry ban.
Travellers of other nationalities should check whether they need a visa or can apply online through Türkiye's official e-visa portal, evisa.gov.tr. Be wary of unofficial websites that charge extra fees.
Passport validity and border checks
The FCDO says British visitors' passports must be valid for at least 150 days from the date of arrival and have at least one blank page. The US State Department advises Americans to hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their trip, also with a blank page. Travel documents that are invalid or have been reported lost or stolen will lead to refused entry.
If you arrive by land, make sure border officials stamp and date your passport. Travellers planning a day trip from the Aegean coast to the Greek islands should note that the EU's Entry/Exit System now applies to non-EU nationals entering the EU from Türkiye, which may add time at the border.
Money and customs
There is no limit on the amount of foreign currency or Turkish lira you can bring in. However, you cannot take out Turkish lira worth more than $5,000, and other currency above that value must be declared on departure. Prohibited imports include controlled drugs, firearms and offensive weapons such as flick knives or self-defence sprays.
Rules can change at short notice, so check your government's latest travel advice and the Turkish Foreign Ministry before you fly.
