Air travel from the United Kingdom to Türkiye fell 8.2 percent in the first eight months of 2026, even as overall air trips from the UK edged higher, according to data compiled by Turizm Databank and reported by the trade outlet Turizm Güncel on 21 October.

Total air travel from the UK rose 0.7 percent year on year in January-August to 200.7 million trips. The data show, however, that the growth was unevenly spread, with some destinations gaining market share while Türkiye lost ground.

Dalaman, Bodrum and Antalya hit

The report named Dalaman, Bodrum and Antalya among the Turkish destinations recording notable losses. All three are long-standing favourites with British holidaymakers and are also home to sizeable communities of British residents and second-home owners, particularly around Fethiye, Göcek and the Bodrum peninsula.

The decline adds to signs of a softer season on parts of the coast. Hoteliers in the Aegean had already pointed to a weaker autumn in Bodrum and Kuşadası, while official figures showed tourism employment falling by about 64,000 jobs.

Spanish cities pull ahead

Over the same period, several Spanish cities recorded strong growth in UK traffic. Trips to Barcelona rose 10.2 percent, Madrid 15 percent, Seville 20.2 percent and Valencia 33.1 percent. The report also said Türkiye underperformed Italy, although it did not give a figure for Italian destinations.

Turizm Güncel argued that the drop in demand for Türkiye cannot be explained by overall market conditions alone, since total UK air travel grew. It suggested that British travellers are increasingly choosing alternative countries and cities, and that changes in flight capacity and connections may also be affecting the numbers.

What it means

The United Kingdom is one of Türkiye’s most important source markets, especially for the southwestern resorts served by Dalaman and Bodrum airports, where the season relies heavily on charter and low-cost flights from British regional airports. A fall in seat capacity on these routes can quickly feed through to hotel occupancy, restaurant trade and short-term rental demand.

For foreign property owners who let their homes to holidaymakers, the trend is worth watching when planning next year’s bookings. Broader visitor trends are tracked in our report on foreign arrivals in January-August, and our guide to living in Fethiye covers the region most dependent on British visitors.
