Türkiye’s State Meteorological Service (MGM) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain and snow in the northern parts of Rize and Artvin on the eastern Black Sea coast, valid from 10:00 on Saturday, 7 November, until 12:00 on Monday, 9 November, according to the Rize news site 2 Mart and the local outlet Gündem Artvin. Elsewhere, forecasters expect a cold, windy weekend, with snow in Eastern Anatolia, frost around Ankara and strong northerly winds on the Marmara and Aegean coasts.
Yellow is the lowest of MGM’s three warning levels, below orange and red. It means the weather could be dangerous for some activities and people should keep up with updates.
Rize and Artvin: up to 100 kg of rain, snow above 600 metres
The warning forecasts intermittent showers that will be very heavy or severe in places, with possible thunderstorms. Rainfall could reach 50 to 100 kilograms per square metre over the warning period. That is the same as 50 to 100 millimetres.
Both outlets said the risks include flooding, flash floods, landslides and lightning.
At higher altitudes, precipitation is expected to fall as snow above about 1,100 metres. The snow line could drop to around 600 metres as temperatures fall. Snow may be more than 20 centimetres deep in places, and icing, frost and blowing snow could disrupt traffic on high roads.
Snow in the east, frost in Ankara
According to MGM forecasts reported by Milli Gazete, Timeturk and Memurlar.net, snow or sleet is expected on Saturday in the north and east of Eastern Anatolia, around Erzurum, Kars and Bayburt, and on high ground in the Black Sea region. On Sunday, snow is forecast to spread across much of Eastern Anatolia and the inner Black Sea region. Erzurum could fall to about minus 4C overnight, with a daytime high of only around 1C.
Ankara is forecast to drop to around minus 1C on Sunday night, with frost and possible icing, especially in the morning. Saturday highs are forecast at about 8C in Ankara and around 12C in Istanbul.
Heavy rain is also expected on the Black Sea coasts of Trabzon, Rize and Artvin, with heavy showers continuing there on Sunday. The heavy rain warning for southeastern provinces on Friday was covered in our earlier report.
Winds on the Marmara and Aegean coasts
Northerly winds are forecast on the Marmara and Aegean coasts on Saturday. On Sunday, strong winds and storms are expected in the Mediterranean region, according to the reports.
MGM publishes its current warnings on its website, mgm.gov.tr.
