Heavy rain that intensified late on Thursday flooded streets, homes and workplaces in central Mersin on Türkiye’s southern coast, and left drivers stranded in the south-eastern city of Adıyaman, Anadolu Agency (AA), Demirören News Agency (DHA) and İhlas News Agency (İHA) reported overnight. No deaths or injuries were reported in either city.
Ground floors under water in Akdeniz and Toroslar
In Mersin, which was under an orange-level weather warning, rain fell on and off from Thursday morning and grew heavier through the night, the three agencies said. Streets in the central districts of Akdeniz and Toroslar were submerged and water entered the ground floors of many homes and shops. AA named the Güneş and Siteler neighbourhoods of Akdeniz among the worst-hit areas, and İHA said some flats in high-rise blocks were also affected, with residents bailing out water with buckets.
Traffic built up on several boulevards and drivers were stuck on flooded roads, the agencies reported. Municipal crews worked through the night to drain the water.
In Mersin’s Karaduvar neighbourhood, a warehouse storing tobacco caught fire during the night. DHA said lightning was thought to have caused the blaze; İHA said it was alleged to have started after a lightning strike. Fire crews, supported by police water-cannon vehicles according to DHA, brought the fire under control after several hours, İHA reported. The building was badly damaged and no casualties were reported. İHA said an investigation into the fire had been opened.
The flooding follows Thursday’s damage in Erdemli and Silifke to the west of the city; see floods hit homes and shops in Mersin’s Erdemli.
Drivers rescued in Adıyaman
In Adıyaman, rain that began in the evening turned Atatürk Boulevard and the city’s ring roads into standing water, with many vehicles stranded, AA and İHA reported. AA said firefighters rescued drivers trapped by the water. İHA reported that firefighters removed the window bars of a flooded house in the Ulu Cami neighbourhood to bring two elderly women out to safety.
