The Sunday market in Fethiye’s Foça neighbourhood, known locally as the "Pazar Pazarı", is getting a roof. While the work goes on, stalls are being set up outside the usual market area, in the surrounding streets, according to local outlets Dost Gazetesi and Fethiye TV.
Fethiye Municipality is building a membrane canopy over about 6,000 square metres of the market area, Fethiye TV reported on 4 November and Dost Gazetesi on 6 November. The municipality’s Public Works Directorate (Fen İşleri Müdürlüğü) will also install gutters to carry rainwater away. The aim is to protect stallholders and shoppers from the weather and make the market more comfortable to use, the reports said.
Market in the side streets for now
Work has started. Dost Gazetesi reported on 2 November that the market was temporarily trading in the side streets ("ara sokaklar") next to its usual site. Fethiye TV had reported in late October that stalls would set up outside the market area, within Foça, during construction. The local site Sondakika48 reported on 30 October that the first steps had been taken.
Shoppers going this Sunday, 8 November, should expect stalls to be spread through nearby streets rather than on the usual market ground.
No confirmed completion date
The reports do not give an official completion date. A stallholder told Dost Gazetesi that traders expected about two months of disruption. In late October, Fethiye TV quoted the head of the local market traders’ chamber as saying the market would operate outside for two weeks. The municipality’s statements reported this week did not mention a timetable.
Weekly street markets (pazar) are a main place to buy fruit, vegetables, cheese, olives and household goods in Türkiye. Fethiye’s larger and better-known market is held on Tuesdays near the town centre.
